paint vintage inspired flowers in procreate
In this Procreate video tutorial, we will create a three-dimensional oval frame, and paint a bouquet of flowers to fill it, all with a sweet, vintage inspired feel. If you’re signed up for the Birch Grove, there are several free resources to go with this, including a paper texture, some free Procreate brushes, and a color palette for the bouquet.
Key Points in this Procreate Tutorial:
Create a 3D look by copying the frame, turning it dark, then apply Gaussian blur to add a shadow
Use a dark background to make sure light colored flowers pop
Draw a quick sketch guide to help with perspective
Use layers to create depth, las shown here with the flower petals and foliage
This is a fairly simple digital gouache floral painting, but the extra details such as the frame, shadowing, and layering of colors and elements make it special. The paper texture, color palette and free brushes featured in this tutorial are available in the Birch Grove (↓sign up for all the free goodies at the bottom of this page↓) as well as details about the Gouache Magic brush set.
Free Procreate Brushes Used In This Tutorial:
I love sharing free Procreate resources, and here’s what I used during the tutorial, along with the closest alternatives I can think of thaat come with Procreate:
SBS Monoline brush - a fairly simple round brush, but with extra stability to smooth your way - alternative: Monoline brush in the Calligraphy set
SBS Tree Magic - a special effects brush great for painting trees (see this short tutorial for a demo) and flowers (here’s an example) and grass, as used in this lesson - alternative: Swordgrass brush in the Organic set
Vintage Flower Oval color palette - this free color palette gives you more shades than you will probably use in this piece, but it’s always great to have alternatives, right?
SBS Gouache Paper - this free paper texture adds so much, and it is a ready-to-use Procreate document - just download, copy (always save a blank version!) and paint
The brush I used to paint the stems, leaves and flowers in this tutorial is one from my Gouache Magic brush pack, the SBS DuoColor Diluted Rough brush, and I used the SBS Less Messy Old brush to create the centers of the flowers, but if you don’t have the set, I suggest using the Mercury brush, which you will find in the Inking section of Procreate.
Add Your Own Twist In Procreate!
I hope you will take some of the tips, tricks and techniques I shared in this tutorial to create art with your own twist in Procreate. The oval frame we made could be any other shape, for example, or you could add additional layers of “paper” in different colors to add even more depth. We just barely touched on painting flowers in perspective, but that opens up all kinds of possibilities in your work to add interest, I hope you enjoyed this lesson, and please let me know if you have questions, or suggestions for other Procreate tutorials you would like me to make for you!
